Fountains, Plate 1

Artist and engraver Charles Hutin French

Not on view

Plate 1 of a series of designs of fountains. This design shows a structure topped by a vessel spouting water. On either side of the pedestal of this vessel, on a plinth, are mermen blowing water out of conchs. On the plinth itself is a grotesque head with water spouting from its mouth, and on the sides are dolphins. In front of the structure, lying on a rock bed is a naked woman looking at the fountain. Next to her hand is a paddle and at her back is a vase spouting water.
