The peculiar shape of this ornament has led some to associate it with a turtle. Earrings with similar projections, and whose dates concur in part with the Han, have been found at sites in Taiwan, North Vietnam, Cambodia, and the Philippines, pointing to a vigorous maritime trade among early cultures along the South China
