On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 681

Primarily a folk instrument played by Azeri ashiqs, bards who perform lyric poems, the çoğur is used for narrative ballads and instrumental pieces often accompanied by drums. The number of strings on a çoğur varies, with up to nine arranged in three courses of three strings each. This instrument, found mainly in western Azerbaijan, has two courses of two strings and one of three.
