This blue and white transfer-printed earthenware plate made by the Staffordshire firm of James & Ralph Clews features a view of the triumphal landing of General Lafayette (1757–1834) in New York Harbor on August 16, 1824 where he was met by the American naval ship “Chancellor Livingston" and escorted to Castle Garden for a huge celebration by thousands of patriotic well-wishers.
