This picture is one of several dynamic, boldly-colored portraits that Derain created around 1905. In addition to depicting Gilbert, a childhood friend of the artist and later a collector of his work, Derain also painted portraits of his fellow artists, Matisse (Tate, London), and Vlaminck (Musée des Beaux-Arts de Chartres).

The sitter was an architect, amateur painter, and friend of Derain's from his hometown, Chatou. There is an ink study for this picture in a sketchbook used by Derain about 1904–6 (Musée National d'Art Moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris). Another Derain painting of Gilbert was formerly in the Museum of Modern Art, New York (Kellermann 1992, no. 372).
