Crafted by a skilled Andalusi sculptor, this exquisite pyxis (cylindrical box) depicts a leafy paradise peacefully inhabited by parrots, gazelles, and lions. A century later a workshop of ivory carvers at the monastery of San Millán de la Cogolla incorporated decorative elements inspired by such Andalusi objects into works like this panel, which shows scenes from the early life of the monastery’s patron saint.
