A burse is a square pocketlike receptacle for the corporal, or the cloth used to cover the elements of the Eucharist. This example is decorated with appliquéd crosses of wide gilt-metal-thread tape and made of plain yellowish green silk cut velvet from seventeenth century Spain. A maniple in the Lehman Collection (1975.1.1875A) is part of the same set.
