Large Boston Public Garden Sketchbook: The streetcar on Tremont Street

Maurice Brazil Prendergast American

Not on view

The Tremont Street streetcar linked central Boston with Roxbury, Prendergast’s home in 1895 and 1896. Prendergast contrasts the quiet passenger in the foreground with the indecorous female boarding the car, her flouncing costume and rounded silhouette provocatively calling attention.
