River Landscape with Sailboats

Aelbert Cuyp Dutch

Not on view

A celebrated landscape painter in Dordrecht, Aelbert Cuyp found his subjects in and around his native environment, as well as elsewhere in the Netherlands, along the Rhine and the Meuse and around Cleve. Cuyp’s drawings often combine chalk, watercolor, and gum arabic to enhance atmospheric effects and amplify space. Although not dated, this drawing calls to mind a series of river views sketched in the environs of Dordrecht in the 1640s.

River Landscape with Sailboats, Aelbert Cuyp (Dutch, Dordrecht 1620–1691 Dordrecht), Black chalk and gray, yellow, and grayish green wash; traces of a colorless varnishlike substance (probably gum arabic) on the grayish green wash toward the right; brown framing lines at the top and bottom and dark brown framing lines at the sides.
