Imaginary Landscape

Monogrammist AM German

Not on view

Although this small drawing belongs to the rich Netherlandish landscape tradition of the sixteenth century, its formulaic handling borders on folk art. The color effects and black border, clearly intended as decorative, suggest that the work may have embellished a piece of furniture, possibly a little chest on which several similar pictures protected by panes of glass adorned small doors or drawer fronts.
