China

Not on view

During the Qing dynasty, high-ranking civil and military officials wore necklaces of beads, which were standard uniform regalia. The beads were made of semiprecious stones and strung with silk ribbons. The rarity of the material and colors of the ribbons signified the ranks of the officials.
