Hogarth made this print early in his career to illustrate a travel book by the French author Aubry de La Mottraye. The related text notes that this emerald vessel preserved at Genoa in the cathedral, was believed to have been given to Solomon by the Queen of Sheba, and then used by Christ at the Last Supper.
