This map of Staten Island, Long Island, Brooklyn, Manhattan, New Jersey and Westchester, shows American and British troop positions during the Battle of Long Island (or Battle of Brooklyn), on August 27, 1776. This was the the first major engagement to follow the publication of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. American troops under George Washington faced the British under William Howe. The map locates American defensive positions on Brooklyn Heights and in Gowanus, as well as British troop positions and movements from Staten Island to Gravesend, Long Island, then into Brooklyn.
