In this document from October 4, 1660, Director-General Peter Stuyvesant of New Amsterdam grants trading privileges to Tomas Wandel (d. 1688-89). Wandel's yacht De Morgenstarren (Morning Star) was given permission to trade with other settlements in the colony and with Dutch allies as far south as Florida. Seventeenth-century records indicate that Wandel lived in Maspeth, Long Island. The director-general's elaborate seal, at lower center, was created by pressing melted wax between decoratively cut sheets of paper. A beaver, the symbol of New Amsterdam, is at the center.
