This edition of Vitruvius' De architectura relies on the translations and illustrations previously prepared by Perrault (Paris, 1673) and Galiani (Naples, 1758). Ortíz y Sanz initiated his Spanish translation in 1777 but required visits to Naples, Pozzouli, and Herculaneum to view the remnants of antiquity before restarting his project in while residing in Rome.
At the lower left corner of the plates "D. J. Ortíz lo delineó", "J. Ortíz dit.", or other similar variations indicate the engravings rely on drawings prepared by the translator Don Joseph Ortíz y Sanz. The engraver's signature appears at the lower right corner and recognize: "N. st.", "f. sc.", "JN sit", "Assensio sc", "M. Brandi lo gravó", "J. Joaquin Fabregat lo gravó", as well as other variants.
