Hall made a successful career as a writer in London, where she forged a powerful partnership with her husband Samuel Carter Hall (1800–1889). He was editor of the monthly periodical "The Art Journal" and, together the Irish-born Halls, published extensively about their native Ireland. In the 1820s she published a number of articles which were gathered together into an anthology in 1829, with another in 1831. In this publication, the expanded third edition from 1842, Hall commissioned leading illustrators to contribute "very beautiful illustrations" as she described them in the introduction. Some came from Ireland, including Cork-born Daniel Maclise who contributed the frontispiece, "Lilly O'Brien."
