In the late 1890s, while working as an actor-manager, Craig met the artists James Pryde and William Nicholson, who taught him how to make woodcuts. Craig and his sister Edith wrote most of the verses in this book, and he cut and printed twenty woodblocks to create the illustrations, published the work himself and dedicated it to his children Rosemary (born 1894) and Robert (born 1895).
