In August 1914, the publisher and soldier Paul Cassirer founded Kriegszeit (Wartime), an art journal that captured the period’s bellicose nationalistic sentiments. He and many of the artists who contributed to it were soon disillusioned by the war, however, and in 1916 he replaced it with Der Bildermann (The Picture Man). Barlach’s cover emphasizes the war’s carnage and uses religious iconography to call for peace.
