Sir Richard Temple and his successor the first Viscount Cobham transformed the gardens here. William Kent and James Gibbs worked with Sir John Vanbrugh, and the landscape architect Charles Bridgeman to create a famous and much visited garden. In the 1740s "Capability" Brown, Cobham's head gardener, made additional modifications.
