Design for Strapwork Ornament

Anonymous, French, 19th century French

Not on view

This strapwork design was likely meant as a tail-piece or vignette in a book. The ornamental vocabulary is inspired by sixteenth-century examples, created in The Netherlands, Flanders and France from ca. 1550 onwards. A renewed interest in this kind of ornament emerged during the nineteenth century, especially during the period of national historicism that peaked in the third quarter of the century.
