Caricature of a Print seller

Jean Charles Delafosse French
Formerly attributed to Ennemond Alexandre Petitot French

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 690

Delafosse was an occasional architect and prodigious designer of decoration and ornament. Here, he puts a humorous twist on the centuries-old tradition of depicting various trades in a series of individual figures.

The seller of prints is envisioned as a chicken sporting a tricorn hat. He wears a box on which are displayed the prints he offers for sale.
