Mask

Master of Kasadi

Not on view

Camille Janssens, the first governor of the Congo Free State between 1887 and 1890 collected this mask that may have been worn by an nganga. As in other examples, the face is arresting for its penetrating gaze, though this interpretation is distinct for the manner in which the beard is carved as a flattened extension at the chin.
