Larson made this photograph in the Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah, Georgia, flattening the space with her choice of lens to accentuate the riotous clash between a Regency-style settee—beckoning to the viewer like a praying mantis—the wallpapered landscape above, and the patterned marble floor below. The results are like a black comedy, macabre and funny, and stem from the artist’s clever overlay of photography and period rooms’ shared characteristics, each offering an uncannily lifelike recreation of a fragment or detail divorced from its original context.
