Terracotta jug

Roman, Asia Minor, Tarsus

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 166

This jug is attributed to one of the workshops producing lead-glazed vessels at Tarsus in southeast Asia Minor. Most of the production was devoted to making drinking cups, and this is a rare example of a different shape that was clearly much influenced by contemporary metalwork.
