Terracotta skyphos (deep drinking cup)

Greek, Attic

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 171

Obverse and reverse, owl between olive sprigs

This work represents a type of skyphos in which one handle is vertical and the other horizontal. Because an owl is frequently the decoration, the shape is known as a glaux, the Greek word for owl.
