Terracotta lekythos (oil flask)

Greek, Attic

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 171

Seated komast

The komast (reveller) holds up either a beaker-shaped cup or krotala (castanets). The figure was painted onto the surface of the vase in added white. The procedure is known as Six's technique, after the Dutch scholar who first studied it.
