Fragmentary terracotta kylix (drinking cup)

Attributed to the Triptolemos Painter

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 157

Interior, athlete

The youth shown here has all the gear of an athlete—shoes, a staff, a pick to loosen the ground when it becomes too packed, an aryballos (oil flask), and a himation (cloak) neatly folded over the goalpost. He is in the process of tying his penis before exercising.
