Portuguese with French enamel

Not on view

Personifications of Hope, Temperance, Faith, and Fortitude are embossed on the inner ring of the dish. The enamel medallion at the center is a later addition.

Portugal shares the Iberian Peninsula with Spain. From 1581 to 1640 it was ruled by Spain, but when this dish was made Portugal was still an independent kingdon with its own artistic traditions.
