This is an original piece of the silk lampas fabric that upholstered the suite of parlor furniture at Millford Plantation, Sumter County, South Carolina. Millford was built by John Laurence and Susan Hampton Manning between 1839 and 1841. All the furniture, upholstery and draperies for that house was ordered from D. Phyfe & Son of New York City. This is a rare surviving piece of documented mid-19th century fabric used in an American home. The fabric and matching trim are unlikely to be of American manufacture. They were probably purchased from either England or France. This sample was used to reproduce the fabric that is now on the American Wing’s window seat 2006.400, and chairs 2013.22.1,.2.
