This drawing is one of the most beautifully finished mosaic designs from Tiffany Studios in the Museum’s collection. Each tessera is represented by tiny, precise brushstrokes to convey how the composition will look when made in glass. Metallic inks convey the lustrous surface of Favrile glass mosaic and are also used for the lettering of the original window mat. The drawing was signed by Louis C. Tiffany, and its fine quality suggests it was a formal presentation version of the design. Although the dedication inscription is not finalized, the panel was probably a memorial to Mrs. Edward Van Ingen’s father, Edward T. Bell, who was a well-known banker and founding member of the Church of the Redeemer in Paterson, New Jersey.
