Die vier herrlich detaillierten Evangelistenportraits in diesem Manuskript, kunstfertig umrahmt in an Zellenemail erinnernder Ausführung, stellen den Höhepunkt der byzantinischen Kunst im späten 11. und frühen 12. Jhd. dar. Hier abgebildet ist der weißhaarige Evangelist Matthäus vor einer Stadtmauer und seinem Namen in Griechisch über sich. Da dieses Manuskript für die Hagia Sophia angefertigt wurde, die Patriarchenkirche des Byzantinischen Reiches, steht es beispielhaft für dessen Interesse an Buchkunst. Kolophone (Inschriften im Text) weisen darauf hin, dass das Werk sich in den ersten Jahren des 18. Jhds. noch in Konstantinopel als Eigentum Chrysanthos Notaras', des Patriarchen von Jerusalem und eines der wichtigsten Mitglieder der sogenannten Griechischen Aufklärung, befand.
