Passover seder plate

Israel Lattes Italian

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 551

This seder plate, with scrolling acanthus leaves, is manufactured by the Jewish silversmith Israel Lattes. The seder plate is used specifically at the festival meal for the Passover holiday to display symbolic foods that represent the Exodus story of the Jewish people from slavery to freedom. Customarily seder plates have six compartments for each of the symbolic foods, specified with Hebrew inscriptions or imagery. In the Jewish communities of the Piedmont region, however, it is common for the Seder plate to lack these identifying features and function as a decorative platter throughout the year, in addition to its ritual function at the Passover feast.
