Printmakers in Mexico often addressed international events such as the Spanish Civil War (1936–39). In this print, Beltrán depicts Manuela Sánchez (Manuela López Suárez), a freedom fighter from Galicia who took part in the ongoing struggle against General Francisco Franco’s fascist forces in Spain. Sánchez is shown as an archetypal guerrilla. Strong and unflinching, with gun in hand, she kneels on a rocky ground littered with bodies, turning to look at figures fleeing a building as if weighing up her next move.
