Celadon Flower Vase (Hanaire)

Japan

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 225

Celadon porcelain originated in China and was introduced to Japan in about the tenth century. These expensive, imported wares became sought-after collectibles among the Japanese elite and were prized especially for their delicate green color. Production of celadon began around the 1620s in Hizen province, on the island of Kyūshū—this elegant flower vase being an early example.
