Plates from "L'Origine del Danubio"

Lodovico Mattioli Italian

Not on view

This group of prints consists of 41 city views and maps which were used as the illustrations for the Italian edition of Sigmund von Birken's "Der Donaustrand" of 1664. They likely derive from the 1685 edition of Girolamo Albrizii, which was published in Venice under the title "L'Orgine del Danubio". Included are also the illustrations of the supplement showing cities in Hungary and Turkey. Rather than being taken from the book, it appears that the prints were obtained as uncut sheets that each contained multiple illustrations. They are numbered in the upper right, but are not in their proper sequence.
