This portrait depicts Saint John with his symbol, the eagle. The caption above him reads, "Picture of Saint John the Evangelist, in the guise of the flying eagle. May his prayer be for us a wall against the power of the enemy and torment. Amen." Evangelist portraits accompanied by their symbols are rare in Ethiopian art, making these leaves distinctive.
