This illustrated guide to American plant life was issued sixteen years before Armstrong's own extensive publication on flora in the Western United States, Field book of western wild flowers (1915). With its muted palette, flowing leaf design and silver stamped flowers, this floral cover features the sanguine Tennyson quote "New leaf, new life—the days of Frost are o'er" written on the silver banner wrapped around the stem.
