Official’s robe
Not on view
During the Joseon dynasty (1392–1910) there were many rules and restrictions about clothing. Social class and wealth determined the types, colors, and materials of the clothing one could wear. Joseon menswear is largely divided into five categories: trousers, long-sleeved tops, vests, robes, and coats. For robes, the sleeve widths, style of the collar, and panel construction of the body define the type of robe and its date. With its rounded collar and wide sleeves, this is an official’s robe that predates the sartorial reforms of 1884. In the mid- and later-20th century, when Western dress became dominant, robes like these were worn at weddings and rituals.
