Adrienne Rich
Alice Neel American
Not on view
Adrienne Rich (1929–2012) was one of the towering figures of late twentieth-century feminism, a movement that buoyed Neel’s late career but about which the artist harbored some political and generational ambivalences. Neel created this sketch to accompany an article about the author in the poetry magazine Parnassus. It shows Rich smiling amiably, betraying none of the tension that permeated their relationship.
