Robbie Tillotson
Alice Neel American
Not on view
Robbie Tillotson (1949–1987) was a promising young artist and actor in the orbit of Warhol when Neel painted him in this lively portrait. Neel’s portrayal not only gives a clear view of Tillotson’s groovy style, complete with bell-bottom jeans, but also aspires to reflect the spirit of the early 1970s, as she believed her portraits had the power to do. Tillotson was one of several of Neel’s young male subjects who would succumb to the AIDS epidemic in the following decade.
