Alienation
Alice Neel American
Not on view
Alienation and Untitled (also in this exhibition) exemplify one of Neel’s greatest strengths as an artist: her candor and honesty, especially when it came to sex, sexuality, and the intricacies of human relationships. Each work presents Neel with her lover John Rothschild, seen at two moments in one year of their long affair and shorn of all romantic sentiment. The scenes are rendered with an extreme delicacy of line and shading that lend them an abstract quality.
