Roger Vivier, the shoe designer for Christian Dior from the 1940s to the '60s, was known for his exquisite forms and extravagant materials. In this evening pump, he took the upturned toe and turquoise blue associated with the glazes and semiprecious stones of the Middle East to create his version of the Orientalist slipper. While the sleek contours of Vivier's shoes invariably narrowed the natural shape of the foot, his innovative heel treatments add tension and even a feeling of incredulity to his designs.
