The Oriental Cupid in Flames

India

Not on view

Shiva is here shown seated on a leopard skin in the forest. A beam of energy radiates out from his third eye as he prepares to burn Kama (lower left), the god of love, to ashes for disturbing his meditations. The right side of the work is occupied by three women, one of whom kneels in devotion and is likely Parvati. Floating in the clouds in the upper right are other gods who watch the unfolding event. This print was never colored so it serves as a wonderful comparative work for the colored Madan-Bhasma version of this same subject, also proposed for acquisition.
