As imaging technologies advanced, astronomers around the world raced to compile a comprehensive lunar atlas. Edward Holden of the University of California’s Lick Observatory published one such atlas in 1897. From his original glass negatives of the moon, he produced enlarged glass positives, such as this one, which were in turn used as the basis for photogravures.
