Buddha Granting Boons

Western Indonesia

Not on view

This Buddha belongs to a small corpus of Buddhist imagery found in Borneo having strong links to the early Javanese tradition and may be seen as part of a Buddhist diaspora around the Java Sea. It clearly was based on an imported model. The circulation of portable metal images among itinerant monks ensured that the metropolitan styles of India and Sri Lanka were rapidly dispersed to the far reaches of the Buddhist world, their influence penetrating even the remote east coast river systems of Borneo.
