The Last Bullet

Huangyan (Zhang Weiyao) Chinese

Not on view

Its cinematic quality and rich graphic details make this print a highly unusual wartime work. The central figure’s action becomes all the more heroic as we begin to take in his fallen comrades, the burning wreckage, and the horrendous chaos about to engulf him.

With no formal training in art, Huangyan (literally, “mist in the wilderness”) began making woodblock prints as a teenager, after the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War in 1937. This work is widely considered his masterpiece.
