This painting was inspired by the last line of Mao Zedong’s poem “Loushan Pass,” written during the Long March (1934–36). By 1964 the Long March was viewed as an old propaganda theme. Yet the political movements and mass mobilization of the 1960s gave fresh impetus to calls for reviving the earlier revolutionary spirit.
