The painting on this water jar is a landscape with sky above and fields below. The sun symbol and the black-on-white geometric design on the neck are typical Acoma pictorial conventions; the pumpkins, however, are an unusual subject matter. Members of the contemporary Acoma community believe an artist created the jar for a special ceremony or as a tribute to a clan that held the pumpkin in particular regard. The squash-blossom flowers and corn between the pumpkins represent fertility.
