Steinhof Church collage

Not on view

Otto Wagner, the father of modern architecture in Vienna, designed many of the city’s landmarks, including the Steinhof Psychiatric Hospital and its crowning glory, the Steinhof Church. Beyond his legacy of built work, Wagner’s most profound influence was on generations of architecture students at the Academy of Fine Arts, including Sottsass’s father. Sottsass often wrote in homage to Wagner and his students, such as Josef Hoffmann. Wagner’s design for the church was particularly sensitive to the needs of the psychiatric patients and the staff who cared for them, just as Sottsass’s designs were attuned to the way in which they would be experienced and used.
