Gift basket
Washoe weavers such as Maggie Mayo James began to incorporate figures into the designs of their baskets in response to the curio market and preferences of Euro-American collectors. This basket features a bird with outstretched wings, presumably an eagle, enclosed within stylized plant imagery akin to laurel—together suggesting a crest. Floating butterflies and traditional geometric imagery join these elements. Such inventive combinations were common in Washoe weaving of the period, made possible by the consummate technical expertise of the artists.
